# India property, run from the United States

Which Indian mission handles your property paperwork is set by the state you live in, not the city you travel from. Nine missions cover the country under a jurisdiction map effective 15 July 2025: the Embassy of India in Washington DC and eight Consulates General.

California is the only state split between two missions, on county lines. Boston holds its five New England states on paper while its office is being stood up, with New York carrying the counter work through VFS in Boston, so check the mission advisory the week you file.

## The state credit question

Most states tax residents on worldwide income and give no credit for the tax India already took, so your relief is the federal foreign tax credit on Form 1116 and nothing else. Three go the other way and credit foreign tax at state level: [Arizona](/usa/arizona), [Indiana](/usa/indiana) and [North Carolina](/usa/north-carolina). Pennsylvania allowed it until Act 2013-52 removed it with effect from 1 January 2014. Each state page below says which group it is in, or says plainly that we have not read that state’s credit rule in its own words.
